HEALTHCARE DEITIES OF HINDUISM & PRAYERS FOR THEIR WORSHIP

HEALTHCARE DEITIES OF HINDUISM & PRAYERS FOR THEIR WORSHIP

Bogged down by fear of disease and consequent death our ancient sages raised their voices to the Supreme with Vedamantras “Mrityor maa Amritam Gamaya”, “mrityor Moksheeya maamritaat” etc., diefied “Mrityu” and all his epoured oblations to the fire with the mantra “mrityave swaha mrityave swaha”.

Soundrya Lahari contains a number of slokas pleading to Sri Lalita to help them cure various diseases. In Vedas in her malevolent form Death she is worshiped by the Veda Mantra “mrityave swaha, mrityave swaha” Hail! May this be an oblation made to Mrityu, the maker of Death. This is done with a view to destroy all evils and neglects connected with the person who makes the offering. A worshiper is represented here as offering repeated oblations to the gods who visit the inside of all people and arraign them to the bar of divine justice. The devotee pleads not guilty and deposes that the Self in us did not do anything, is not an agent, or an abettor. So the devotee worships the Deity of Death so that the worshiper may be left in his pure nature as he has now surrendered all his Egos to his Self.

LORD KRISHNA AS THE HEALER
Krishna is considered the savior of the humanity and remover of all sufferings. “Chanting Krishna Mantra removes all confusions and fears and enhances confidence and courage. It helps cure all kinds of diseases and promotes overall well-being, a state of tranquility and prosperity in the household. It dispels all kinds of negativity and fills household with positive vibrations” says Swami Prabhupada while commenting on various hymns of Bhagavad Gita.
Current Corona Virus pandemonium has threatened humanity with lot of insecurity and anxiety.  “The ideal that Geetā places before us is “to remain without agitation” in adversity.  The phrase “being equal towards joy and sorrow” appears frequently in the scripture.  Carrying on without losing heart, practicing patience and fortitude, staying firm in our undertakings and resolves, and exerting without dependence on success are among the many pointers that Shri Krishna’s Masterterpiece Bhagavd Gita gives us, which inspire us to stay objective in times of crisis. Negative influences from outside then cannot cloud our judgment” says Swami Chidananda..

HYMN ON KRISHNA  AS THE HEALER

Here is a prayer on Lord  Krishna as Healthcare taker inspired by the mantra “Vaisdyo Naerayano Harih” by Kulasekhara Azhvar in Mukundamala:

Is the holy medicine of Sri Krishna.
And so, devotees drink it to your fill.

APPENDIX

Gods of Healing in Hinduism
Shalini  Mahapatra
The present Pandemic times with the COVID -19 scare hovering all over mankind, it is conviction and optimism that remains the guiding force to usher in every new day into our lives. The most powerful countries of the world have been silenced by the merciless slaughter of the Corona pandemic and continue counting on the rising numbers of casualties. While the doctors and scientists look for a solution, humankind looks loyally towards the unknown power with a prayer on its lips. Today time become the most commanding element in life and the human species is learning its lessons to shun its alter ego and humbly nurture patience and perseverance.  The world that was once divided on the basis of economic and military strength has moved in closer to save its populace from a mysterious foe. Until the preventive or the curative antidote is released the only hope lies in the Divine.
Many ancient religious cultures and scriptures of the world, deities are dedicated to health and well-being of the living kind. In Greek mythology Apollo is regarded as the God of medicine and healing. Airmed, in Irish mythology is known for her proficiency in therapeutic healing of patients wounded in battles. She is also known as the keeper of Irish herbal healing. Heka is an ancient Egyptian God associated with health and wellness. The Japanese pray to Shinto as the deity for good health. As per Chinese Feng Shui the three old men- Fuk, Luk and Sao, together are traditional Chinese deities, regarded as spirits of health, wealth and longevity.
In Hinduism there exist Gods with dedicated authority over diseases and healing powers. Many of these Gods have universal acceptance in Hinduism while some are region specific, having gained recognition locally.   The Hindu scripture – The Atharvaveda, is regarded as an ancient encyclopedia for medicine and a text on the science of mortal existence. It gives an insight regarding ancient Vedic medical science and its procedures that existed in ancient India. Many procedures pertaining to medicine have been discussed in here. The Atharvaveda has around one hundred and fifty three hymns dedicated to health and healing and two hundred and fifteen hymns devoted to physiology. It also discusses the various natural sources and resources available, their remedial and psychosomatic powers.
Ayurveda, the earliest Vedic science of life is an Upaveda meaning a supplementary Veda in the Atharvaveda. Ayurveda is a dedicated text on ancient Indian herbal healing techniques and formulas. Scriptures reveal that Brahma –The Creator, furnished the therapies of Ayurveda. He then passed this knowledge to his son, Daksha Prajapati. Daksha further passed it down to the twin Vedic Gods Ashwin Kumars.
Surya
Sun is the universal healer who possessewsa huge quantum of healing powers he possesses. The Vedas describe the Sun as the “Giver of life”. A fusion of water, turmeric, rice grains, jaggery, sindoor and flower petals are offered to Sun in a copper urn post bath by uttering the mantra mentioned below brings mental and physical wellbeing.
ऊँ घ्रिनि सुर्याये नमह्। “OM GHRINI SURYAAYAI  NAMAHA”
Offering water with arghya on a daily basis , facing the morning Sun is considered as an important ritual for maintaining a good heart, balanced mind, eyes, bones, skin and overall good health.
The Surya Namaskar, a salutation to the Sun God activates and benefits every body part when it is performed. The Atharvaveda gives reference to around twenty two diseases that can be cured by the curative capacity of the sun rays. The sun is immense and so its healing benefits.
Ashwin Kumars
The Ashwins are youthful horsemen with magical powers of well being. They are the twin Gods of health and healing as described in the Vedas. The Ashwin Kumars are the children of Surya and his wife Sanjana when they lived together as horses. The name Ashwin is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Ashwa’ meaning ‘Horse’. The Ashwins are youthful horsemen with magical powers of well being.  In the Mahabharata the Ashwini Kumar blessed Pandu’s wife Madri with twins Nakul and Sahadev . They are also called the slayers of darkness and are associated with light. The Rigveda describes the Ashwins as the messengers of light. They are closely in association with Usha, the Goddess of dawn and can be best invoked during the hours of daybreak. The Ashwins are also considered the Physicians of the Gods.
Dhanvantari
Dhanvantari, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu is worshiped as the lord of Medicine. As per legends, the Devatas urged Vishnu from the Asuras and asked him to grant them the boon of immortality. Vishnu suggested that they churn the ocean and in the process they could get many things that would help them escape the wrath of the demons and also achieve the key to immortality. The Samudra Manthan was organized and the ocean was churned by the Devatas and the Asuras . Many valuable things were gathered in the process. Airavat the elephant, The Apsaras, the Gandharvas, the Parijat flower , the Kalpavriksha, Kamadhenu the Divine cow , Goddess Lakshmi and finally towards the end Dhanvantari emerged out of the Samudra Manthan. Dhanvantari stood with a pitcher of elixir (amruta) the nectar of immortality. Post the distribution of the immortality nectar, Vishnu blessed Dhanvantari to be born as the God incarnate of medicine and nurture Ayurveda for the assistance of humankind. Dhanvantari is considered responsible for curing diseases, steady healing, ceasing fear and curtailing death. He is also known to be the father of medicinal plants.
Vaidyanath
Vaidyanath is Shiva incarnate. The Sanskrit word ‘Vaidya’ means physician ‘Nath’ means Lord, so Vaidyanath may be translated to the ‘Lord of Physicians’. It is believed that the Maha Pundit, and the king of Lankapuri , and the most ardent devotee of Lord Shiva,  Ravana prayed to Lord Shiva and earned many boons from him. He became very powerful with these boons and started misusing them to the extent that he abducted Sita . The heinous acts of Sita’s abduction lead him to a war with Lord Ram. Ravana lost the battle with Lord Ram. Ravana was severely injured in the battle and was treated by Shiva as Vaidyanath. According to another legend, it is believed that while offering his penance to Lord Shiva, to earn boons, Ravana offered his ten heads to Lord Shiva one by one. Impressed by this inimitable offering of  Ravana, Lord Shiva restored all the ten heads of Ravana by playing the role of a Vaidya or physician and then blessed him with power and immortality. Thus Shiva was called Vaidyanath. Lord Vaidanath is prayed as a healer and curative incarnation of Lord Shiva.
Yogeshwar
In Hindu scriptures Lord Shiva is an Adi Yogi and a Maha Yogi- The founder and first practitioner of Yoga. Another name of Lord Shiva is Yogeshwara- The ‘Eshwara of Yoga’. As Yogeshwara, Shiva personifies the practice of Yoga that deals with the well-being and vigour of body, mind and consciousness. Yoga brings together the cosmic energy and regulates it to attain the loftiness of spiritual strength that can be attained through the fitness of body and mind.
Shiva is a symbol of eternal life. He is also treated as the lord of meditation, having the power of dissolving the entire universe into him. Goddess Parvati is considered to be the first yoga disciple of Lord Shiva. Upon his marriage with Parvati, he shared the secrets of Yoga with her by teaching her 84 yogic asanas or postures. These 84 asana could eradicate all the ill effects in a person’s life and yield auspicious results. These asanas were considered as Raja Yoga and had the capacity of making a person healthy and successful.
Siva and Parvati kept these Yogic postures a secret. Parvati wished to share the curative postures with the world as a beneficial therapy but Lord Shiva was not very keen.  After much persuasion Lord Shiva agreed to share the secrets of Yoga with mortals . Lord Shiva taught the Sapta Rishis the art and science of Yoga of on the banks of Kanti Sarovar, near Kedarnath on the night of Shivaratri. To sum it all Shiva is the ‘God of Yoga’.
Shitala Mata
An incarnation of Adi-Shakti Goddess Durga, Shitala Mata is worshiped as the Goddess with curative powers who has the ability to cure viral diseases like chickenpox, smallpox, flue, measles, sores, ghouls , cholera, dysentery etc. In Sanskrit Shitala translates to “One who cools”. Goddess Shitala carries a pitcher of medicinal cold water to relieve the suffering population and to cure them from ailments.
As per legend, there was once an Asura named Jwarasur. He was named Jwarasur because he is the demon of jwara or fever. He rampantly spread incurable fever to children, adults and old  sparing none from his feverish wrath. There was no prevention or cure found for such fever. Lord Shiva and Parvati decide to draw an end to the pandemic he caused. Parvati decides that the power of her coolness will bring relief to the suffering of humankind. Shiva transforms himself into Bhairav and reaches the battlefield where he confronts Jwarasur and tries to stop him from causing the spread of the epidemic. Both Bhairava and Jwarasur indulge in combat. Goddess Shitala appears on the battlefield and infects Jwarasura with brutal life taking viruses causing several diseases to him. Jwarasura succumbs to diseases and humankind is free from his disease causing wrath.
This form of curative Adi shakti is worshiped across India by different names and in different forms. In Northern India she is Shitala Mata; in South India she is worshiped as Mariamman. In Orissa as Thakurani and Mangala and Oladevi in West Bengal, Oridevi in Marwar region of Rajasthan. She is known as Katyayini and Bhagawati in several parts of east India. She is also known as Pranasavari in Buddhist and Hindu scriptures.

Äyushya-Süktam
Every human being has come to this world with a pre-destined period. However, because of our ignorance and abuse/non-use of free will, we end up living less than the period that we are allowed. Äyuya-Sūktam is a prayer to the Lord to bless us with long life. After all, whatever a person desires to achieve can be achieved only in this human life. The incarnation of animals and devatās are only bhoga-śarīra and not karma-śarīra. The possibility of complete longevity by puruārtha - self-effort, the full term of life is achieved by specific prayer such as Äyuya-Sūktam.

The Sūktam has nine mantras praying for long life. The prayer is addressed to various deities such as Brahmā, Śiva, the Sun, and all the celestials who are guardians of the universe.
Äyu = all facets of mental and physical health and nourishment, and thus is the purpose of this Sūktam.
Äyushyam = Promoting long healthy prayerful Dhārmic life in every auspicious way. This is the motive and spirit in which you can listen to or chant this mantra.

All mantras/sūktam cannot be used for homam (fire-ritual). Thankfully, Äyuya-Sūktam can be/is used in performing ‘Äyuya-homam. It is/can be performed on ones nakatra-birthday. The whole ritual could be – Gaapati-Pūjā/homam, Navagraha-homam, Mahā-mtyuñjaya-homam, Bhāgya-sūktam, and Äyuya-homam. If four tviks (Priests) are performing, each may offer 27 oblations to make a total of 108 oblations for ‘Äyuya-homam.
In the absence of fire-ritual, simple chanting can be done.

AYUSHYA SUKTAM (YV) FOR HEALTH CARE
 Dr. C L Prabhakar

 ‘Svayushya mahayama sasvat’
May we grow better with Life that is granted before!

This Sukta is from Yajurveda to ensure long health and remedy in case any change in health occurs. This is employed in recitation and as formulas for homa going in the name of ‘Ayushya Homa. It is worthwhile to know the text to help the discussion’. Hence the text is reproduced here for the benefit of those who like to have access to the mantras in original.
There are positive experiences owing to the Upasana of the same. The Health of the devotees get maintained and in case difference occurs it would be redressed.

Ayushya Sukta is  one of the popular Suktas quite well practiced in the Indian Tradition. Mere recitation per day would be good enough to evoke and ensure maintenance of normal health like temperature 98.4 degrees of heat in the body. Also like balancing the BP120/80. The blood flow is health and differences any can be corrected through some means or the other. Mantras are sure sources of benefit since the sounds are vibrant enough to influence the system knowingly and unknowingly. The truth lies in faith and experience only. Guru is the surety to the Upasana mode rich in the Vedic Tradition. In the fast growing progress in all fields the Vedic mantras remain constant and yielding results irrespective of changes in the activity.

The word Ayuh in Sanskrit has five and more meanings. It means body, mind, long life, quick healing, freedom from untoward changes and accidents. When the related deities that are mentioned in the sukta are revered with the ghee offering or any other suitable dravya in a homa performance or mere prayer with folded hands would amount to the reaping of the rewards or results known and unknown. This Sukta itself indicates the prayoga (applications) directions and material offered in case the Havana were to be undertaken with the mantras turned into yajus employable at the  homa..

The verbs signify the viniyoga in the hymn. It is specifically mentioned that clarified butter is the prime offering to the deities whose names are taken and related to the aspect of Life and progress of the devotees in the subject. Every word in the sukta is of great eminence and power and the effect increases as they are uttered repeatedly.

The expression ‘isano devah nah ayurdadhatu’ in the hymn clearly states that the deity who is by name the Isana, the overlord of all, should accord long ``life. Isana is the name of Lord Rudra who is Mrutyunjaya, the universal healer and a bhishak. Also we see another prayer: sa mrutyupasan apanudyaghoran.ihayushenah’ meaning that Lord should obviate the strong nooses of the death and the forms of obstacles thrown at us and provide us relief and comfort. Here we remember the Mrutyunjaya mantra where the Lord is requested to obviate the pasas and ensure immortality (Tryambakam yajamahe….mrutyormukshiya mamarutat).

We do not know pain when we come into this world since our mother who gives birth to us experiences all that labor pain thereby god gives 50% rebate of pain  to us while birth when we are pushed into this world. But we get to know of the balance 50% of it at the time of leaving the world. That is called marana badha (pain at the time of death) when the life, the prana does not exit quickly. We make a prayer that the Lord should ensure less potency of pain, if at all, when we leave our body. The traditional solution is When the Lord’s name is taken the exit would be pain free to some extent( ‘sunayasena maranam vina dainyana jivita…aradhita govinda pada yugmaih siddhyati)

Also we see the prayer again ‘tamayushe vardhayamo ghrutena’ meaning we revere him for balance in the state of health and happiness when breathing one’s life by offering the offering of Ghee. We have the mention of deities in the sukta who should guard our life and support happiness (ayusheno jushantam).

In the 6th mantra, the devotee includes all h is people to be protected with health when he says ’ma nah prajagum ririsho (trouble) mota viran’. Here the devotee refers and includes his kith and kin to be also taken care for health and happiness.  Healing and cure is ensured to them too with this mantra.  The defense forces are also accounted in the prayer (mota viran); if they are safe, our safety is secured.   Veda always preaches this ethical generality. Therefore, Vedas are great eternal and meant for proper action and peace. How not we endeavor to recite a word or mantra from Veda per day when so much of assurance and hope is invested in these mantra-set.

In the 8th Verse, we have mention of ten gods at a palace. They are   Vasus, Rudras Adityas, Maruts, Sadhyas, Yakshas, Gandharvas etc., who would extend care of health to the devotees throughout. These are the guardians of Health care. They are the Divine personnel in the realm of gods constantly at work protecting the devotees.

Various Deities of Veda and later are the functionaries marking and guarding the   fate of the beings born on land while the Lord Vishnu is the ‘antimo devah’, Vishnu is the deity Final, to grant yet higher benefits. Here the prayer is ‘svayushyamahayama sasvat’ meaning ’may we grow with our own life span granted for us before coming into this world.

It is necessary to ask for security of life on the earth. The same in other  way is seen in the chamakam when we  recite to make prayer dirghayutvam cha me’ anamitram cha me abhayam cha me…’full life is sure when there are no-enemies, health and fearlessness. This is the ensured security we solicit to occur with the help of Yajna that one does.

Ultimately in the 9th mantra, we have the praise to Sri Maha Vishnu to whom the prayers are submitted for counter signature of the desires and the Health care issues both for the doctors, patients, the animals and all beings that breath life here on Earth. It is so since He is deemed as the finale deity of the deities and of all gods. He is submitted with a prayer: Sarma (Happiness and peace) yaccha(bless us). Sarma is the finale of happiness meaning liberation and yaccha is the verb to mean to provide. He provides summarily the beatitude and freedom from servitude. Happiness the goal of all pursuits which would be granted by the Paramatan Vishnu. Our Puranas say that Gods grant us desires and would if they admire put us at the entrance of the road for Moksha, but do not grant Liberation Mukti. But Vishnu grants the End, the Liberation, the Janma rahitya. So this Ayushya sukta is one tool for Health care and longevity and Veda in Principle contains thousands of such formulas. It is best to revert always to Vedic Healing laying Trust on the Vedic gods.

In this manner, we have many other suktas of Veda which have grown popular in the Indian tradition .Our life span is rewarded when we pick up such helpful suktas and mantras of the Vedas and reduce into our routine life that the routine would be stout and ensured.
