Navagraha worship is inspired by the worship of Vedic deities Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon) and Brihaspati (Jupiter), later including some planets Mars, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and the nodal points of Moon Rahu and Ketu. People of all faiths always believed in the influence of the planets on human life with the first-hand experience of Life on earth. Logically speaking, the creation of planets precedes that of human beings. Hence, some sort of cause and effect relationship must subsist between the two. This seems to be the basis for Navagraha belief.
Scientific explanation of eclipses was propounded in India in 499CE by Aryabhata (born in 476 CE) in his treatise Aryabhatiyam. According to this theory, solar and lunar eclipses occur when the Moon is at either of its orbital nodes. These theoretical points move in a direction opposite to that of the planets and complete an orbit in the rather short period of 18.6 years. This development was immediately taken note of by astrological pundits, who classified the two nodes as planets, implying that they were now amenable to mathematics. Since they were hypothetical they were dubbed as shadow planets. The 6th century CE text Brihajjataka by Varahamihira includes Rahu and Ketu in the list of planets, and even gives their synonyms: Tamas, Agu and Asura for Rahu; and Shikhi for Ketu (Rao 1986, p.76), which however never gained currency. The two nodes are 180 degrees apart so that specifying one fixes the other. It would thus have sufficed to include just one of them for both stages. Religious Hindu mind started working here. Time is God. 7 days were then worshiped as seven grahas. So they added two more and created a Navgraha Altar an altar of Time that rules our destiny two being shadow grahas more fearful acting from behind! 9 is made up of 1+8=9 where 1 (one) stands for Saguna Brahman and 8 for Ashtadikpalakas 8 deities ruling over the eight quarters of the universe; Indra, Yama, Varuna and Kubera (East, South, West, and North); The intermediate directions are ruled by Agni (South East), Nritti (South West), Vaayu (North West), and Isaana (North East). Here we have a mix of friendly and dreaded deities mix as in Navagraha altars. These deities of eight quarters also figure in Vedic astrology as ruling deities of a Nakshtra in their domain among 27 Nakshatras of the month from Asvini to Revati. Rahu and Ketu puranic creations drew support from Nirriti.
Vedic Astrology called Jyotiṣha is one of the Vedāṅga, the six auxiliary disciplines used to support Vedic rituals. Early Jyotiṣha was concerned with the preparation of a calendar to fix the date of sacrificial rituals. Sun, Moon, Mother Earth and Brihaspati were venerated and worshiped as Vedic deities, not from astronomical considerations. Nothing was written on planets. But we come across a Nakshatrasookta in Taittareeya Brahmana and Taittareeya Samhita reproduced in Mantra Pushpa of Ramakrishna Math. Various deities mentioned in this sookta are mentioned as presiding deities as Sakti or power of 27 Naksharas from Aswini to Rohini. Sun, Moon and Brahaspati mentioned in this sookta are also worshiped along with four planets Kuja (Mars), Budha, (Merecury) Venus (Sukra), Sani (Saturn) and two ascending and descending nodal points of Moon called Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are the demons mentioned in Puranas responsible for causing eclipses periodically. There are mentions of eclipse causing "demons" in the Atharva- veda and Chāndogya Upaniṣhad; the Chhandogya Upanishad mentioning Rāhu. In fact the term Graha, which is now taken to mean planet in Hindu astrology was originally meant demon. You have heard about several demons disturbing Sandhyvandana and the need for Arghya to drive them away in Garuda Purana! Ṛigveda and later Mahabharata and Ramayana mention an eclipse causing demon, Svarbhānu. Planet is a wrong translation for Graha as Navagrahas include only five planets--Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn; the Sun is a star; the Moon is a satellite; and two nodal points of Moon are Rahu and Ketu. They are all given the same title Graha which is a Sanskrit term meaning that which pulls.
After long observations of Sun and Moon with naked eyes our Rishis found only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn that followed the zodiac road like a 7 lane express high way. That made 7 celestial bodies from Sun to Saturn after which weekdays were named. They did not have Hubble Telescope but only divine vision (divya chakshu.)

Nirṛti is the Hindu goddess of deathly hidden realms and sorrows, one of the dikpāla (Guardians of the directions), representing the Southwest. The name nirhti has the meaning of "absence of orderliness". Nirrti is the presiding deity of Mula Nakshatra in Vedic astrology, strongly associated with Kali in the form Dhumavati. Nirṛti is mentioned in a few hymns of the Rigveda, mostly to seek protection from her or imploring for her during a possible departure from the world or in death -bed. In one hymn (X.59), she is mentioned several times. This hymn, after summing up her nature, also asks for her to depart from the sacrificial site. In the Atharva Veda (V.7.9), she is described as having golden locks. In the Taittiriya Brahmana (I.6.1.4), Nirṛti is described as dark, dressed in dark clothes and her sacrificial shares are dark husks. In the Shatapatha Brahmana (X.1.2.9), she is associated with the Southwest quarter as her region. But elsewhere in the same text (V.2.3.3.) she is mentioned as living in the kingdom of the dead like Yama who is also a dikpalaka. The goddess has a dark black complexion similar to Devi Kali. Nirriti is also similar to Mahavidyas, Dhumavati. She is also named Alakshmi, and she wears a black dress and iron ornaments. Astrologers of present days relate her to Ketu Graha that is not a female but the serpent body of a demon separated out by Sudarsana chakra during churning of the ocean but still lives because of the stolen amrita drunk by the demon whose head Rahu also lives and believed to cause eclipse. The 6th century CE text Brihajjataka by Varahamihira includes Rahu and Ketu in the list of planets, and even gives their synonyms: Asura for Rahu; and Shikhi for Ketu (Rao 1986, p.76), which however never gained currency. Navagraha altars found in Siva and Sakta temple or temple door lintels include Rahu and Ketu with (shadow)planet status along with seven others where only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are planets, Sun is a Star and Moon a Satellite.
A soul when dies will go into a mother's womb according to its karma. That means the soul gets into a yoni to take birth based on past Karma-Yogyata (fitness). The soul taking rebirth into its past family is very rare. After death the soul will not have any connections, relationships, emotions attached to past family. It will start a new journey. The ancestral souls are waiting to be born in the families suitable. Any child born in a family will be linked to an ancestral soul in that family tree. This is known as pitru raashi after which pitru dosha is explained and remedial measures are suggested by astrologers. These ancestral souls influence the mind and actions of the living.
The physical and psychological traits of parents are transferred to the children. Every human cell or the DNA is the aggregate of human experiences, values, thoughts and actions of an individual carried through a long chain of existence. According to Navajyotisree Karunakara Guru, pitru dosha or ancestral problems are the result of wrong values, thoughts and actions in the life of our ancestors, which influence the life and destiny of the offspring.
- Ayurveda focuses on Arogya; it deals with it in a more immediate and effective manner than Vedic astrology, but Vedic astrology may better reveal long term health trends or disease potentials.
- Yoga and Vedanta orient us to Moksha or the liberation of consciousness in a direct manner, but Vedic astrology also helps us understand our readiness or timing for its pursuit.
- Vedic management deals more appropriately with Artha as the goals and wealth that we wish to achieve, but Vedic astrology shows important trends and timing issues here also.
- Vedic teachings on Dharma address our life purpose and action in a primary way, but Vedic astrology shows our potentials, hidden capacities and possible changes in this area as well.
The first paragraph below relates to the textual reference. The others consists of my own comments based upon it. Note that this is a special teaching that I first uncovered and translated around twenty years ago, though many Vedic astrologers have since come to use and refer to it. It mainly refers to positions of the Moon but can be extended to the ascendant and other planets.

Vedic
Astrology and Self-knowledge
Vedacharya David Frawley
Vedic
astrology or Jyotish is an integral part of all Vedic teachings as it is one of
the most important aspects of Vedic knowledge. Yet we approach Vedic astrology
in a way that may be different from what many groups do, which is to use
Jyotish to simply tell a person’s fortune or predict events in their outer
lives. We approach Vedic astrology as a way of Self-knowledge, Self-healing and
Self-realization through Yoga, Ayurveda and Vedanta – providing insight on how
to understand our karmas, work with them and transcend them. Vedic astrology is
an important, if not essential tool of Vedic counseling ,as it helps us
understand our karmas in life and how to best address and transcend them.
We
have been critical of the superficial fortune telling that can go on under the
name of astrology, East or West. That is not the authentic Vedic approach, and
often creates fear or false expectations in the mind of clients. Vedic
knowledge teaches that our inner being and higher Self transcends time and
karma, but to reach it we must properly harmonize our manifestation in body and
mind – learning how to understand our karmas, not just pursue personal
happiness. The Vedic chart helps us understand not only our karmas at birth but
how these unfold over time through its sophisticated set of dashas or planetary
periods.
Predictive and Counseling Models of
Vedic Astrology
Vedic
astrology today is dominated by two main lines of interpretation; the first is
predictive, while the second is counseling based. Each has its place.
While
Vedic astrology can help us understand important trends in our lives, it does
not embrace fatalism, nor make a correct timing of our outer events the most
significant factor in how we live. As immortal souls we are not slaves of any
outer destiny and can learn to adjust our karmic energies and engagements for a
greater creativity and awareness.
We
all come under certain karmic influences, both individual and collective that
affect our lives, sometimes in dramatic manner, some of which may be
unavoidable. Yet we also have an ability to adapt to these influences – and
through a higher consciousness utilize them in a spiritually transformational
direction. Human life is a creative and spiritual unfoldment; it is not simply
a working out of mechanical forces, like a ball rolling down a hill that cannot
chose which way to go. If we develop a higher awareness through meditation our
well-being will not be determined by mere transient outer events.
The
Vedic counseling approach to Vedic astrology helps us understand the planetary
influences operating in our lives and the various times at which they will
likely predominate. This is not to blindly accept them as fate but to learn how
to adjust to their energies in an optimal manner, like adjusting to the seasons
in our outer lives. Our bodies reflect our doshas of Vata, Pitta and Kapha as
explained in Ayurvedic medicine. Our minds reflect the gunas of sattva, rajas
and tamas as explained in Yoga philosophy. Our lives reflect our karmas as
explained in Vedic astrology. Yet our true Self or Atman transcends body, mind
and karma.
Scope of Vedic Astrological
Counseling
Vedic
astrology forms an important counseling model because it is the only Vedic
discipline that has tools for examining all the main goals of life as Dharma,
Artha, Kama and Moksha, as well as the underlying Arogya or physical and mental
health necessary to pursue them. That is why astrology is said to be the eye of
the Vedas and the guide for all Vedic practices.
- Ayurveda focuses on Arogya; it deals
with it in a more immediate and effective manner than Vedic astrology, but
Vedic astrology may better reveal long term health trends or disease
potentials than an Ayurvedic examination.
- Yoga and Vedanta orient us to Moksha or
the liberation of consciousness in a direct manner, but Vedic astrology
also helps us understand our readiness or timing for its pursuit, which
may not be suitable for everyone.
- Vedic management deals more
appropriately with Artha as the goals and wealth that we wish to achieve,
but Vedic astrology shows important trends and timing issues here also.
- Vedic teachings on Dharma address our
life purpose and action in a primary way, but Vedic astrology shows our
potentials, hidden capacities and possible changes in this area as well.
In
short, Vedic astrology as the eye of the Vedas helps us understand the
different aspects of our lives and provides us a good overview of their development.
It can help us understand which Vedic disciplines may be most needed for us at
any particular period of time, particularly as our world moves into a greater
period of civilizational crisis in the twenty-first century.
Vedic
astrology provides a comprehensive overview that supports any type of Vedic
counseling, Vedic educational approaches, or Vedic treatment measures. That is
why it is important for every individual to have his or her Vedic chart
examined by an astrologer trained in deeper Vedic values and insights through
Yoga and Vedanta, practicing Jyotish as a sadhana.
The
true role of a Vedic astrologer is that of a life counselor, helping us
understand not only the outer movement of our lives, but the more important
inner movement and spiritual development behind it. For this we need a deeper
level of guidance, inspiration and motivation. The true Jyotishi aids us in
Self-knowledge and can guide us on the spiritual path with respect for our
karma.
There
can be no lasting positive changes in life unless we develop Self-knowledge – a
knowledge of who we truly are at the level of inner consciousness, not simply
as outer personalities. Vedic astrology interpreted rightly helps us connect
with our inner being or higher Self – that is its true purpose as is the case
with all Vedic disciplines. It directs us to rituals, mantras and meditation
practices to help us address the karmic limitations in our birth chart and
unfold our higher aspiration. Vedic astrology has as its true goal the higher
knowledge, not simply making us more successful as an ego in the material
world.
